Description

Peter Orlando was an American-born artist of Italian heritage who became a central figure in French ceramics and painting. Trained in drawing at the Newark Academy of Arts and later at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, Orlando discovered Paris during World War II and made it his creative home.

In 1952, together with his wife Denise Delgoulet, he founded a ceramics workshop in Paris. Their collaboration was distinctive: Peter shaped the forms while Denise decorated them with bold, modern, and abstract designs. Their ceramics signed Peter Orlando, Denise Orlando, Orlando, or Orla were characterized by supple forms, vibrant colors, and graphic motifs reminiscent of Miró and Klee. Exhibited alongside leading ceramists such as Georges Jouve and Jacques Innocenti, their work became part of the flourishing French ceramics scene of the 1950s and 60s.

Orlando also pursued painting, exhibiting at the Salon d’Automne in 1957 and holding his first solo show in 1958. By 1968, he closed the ceramics workshop to focus entirely on painting, establishing a studio in Normandy and exhibiting internationally.

In 1984, the couple settled in Saint-Céré, later donating their works to the commune of Saint-Jean-Lespinasse, which inaugurated L’Espace Orlando in 2007 as a permanent exhibition space. His legacy bridges ceramics and painting, blending utilitarian design with expressive abstraction, and continues to inspire collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide.
